Mattie T. Shackleford papers [manuscript], 1918-1920.

The collection contains letters and postcards written by Shackleford during her training in the United States and service in France and Serbia. Small snapshots of Serbian scenes are enclosed. Also of interest are letters written to her by Sergius Alexich, a Serbian veterinarian; and a formal portrait of her. The bulk of the collection consists of the family correspondence of attorney Charles S. Smith, Jr., Nellie Shackleford Smith, of Gloucester, Va., and Mary Henry Shackleford Mattox. Topics include the latter's stay at the Tucker Sanatorium and desire for a divorce, and the schooling and career choices of Charles S. Smith III and his sister Nellie. There are some remarks about World War II food shortages and the black market. The collection also contains a political form letter from Virginia Lieutenant Governor candidate Saxon W. Holt, 1937, a letter from Virginia Senator Aubrey G. Weaver, and a variety of miscellaneous pamphlets, invitations, form letters, solicitations, maps, and financial receipts and tax statements.

circa 489 items.
